The start of a new school year in September often brings excitement. However, as students settle into their routines, the initial thrill of new supplies and summer stories fades, giving way to the reality of impending deadlines and assessments that dominate the first term.
From September to late November, students aged 10–17 face crucial exams and deadlines that significantly impact the next phase of their educational journey. With the demands of extracurricular activities and increasing homework, staying organized can be challenging. To help, we’ve compiled a list of key dates to be aware of this autumn, along with links to our top preparation tips.
11+ Assessment
Who? UK Year 6 students (ages 10–11) applying for secondary school in September 2025.
When? Between September and November.
Where? Tests are usually held at the target school or the student’s current school (for some exams like the 11+ Consortium).

13+ ISEB Common Pre-Test
Who? UK Year 6 or 7 students (ages 10–12) applying for senior school in September 2027 or 2028.
When? From late October to early November.
Where? Tests can be taken at the student’s current school, target school, or an independent test center.

16+ Entry
Who? Year 11 students (ages 15–16) applying for sixth form or college in September 2025.
When? Open evenings occur in September and early October, with most registration deadlines by mid-September. Entrance exams and interviews typically take place between late October and early November.
Where? In-person at the respective sixth form or college.

UK Universities
Who? Year 13 students (ages 17–18) applying to UK universities for September 2025 entry.
When? Admissions tests generally take place between late September and early November. The application deadline for Oxbridge, medicine, and other specialist subjects is October 15th.
How? Through the UCAS application system.

US Colleges and Universities
Who? Year 13 students (US Grade 12) (ages 16–18) applying to US colleges or universities for September 2025 entry.
When? SAT and ACT exams should be taken in October. Early Decision (ED/EDI) deadlines are typically between November 1st and 15th.
How? Applications are submitted via the Common App or state-specific platforms. Some specialized institutions, like art and design schools, may accept direct applications.
